Baby Jokes
Various specials and performances
Find on AmazonJeselnik has built a cottage industry of baby jokes—jokes about babies dying, babies in danger, babies in situations no reasonable person would find funny. The subject is arguably the hardest to make work in comedy. Jeselnik makes it look easy.
The secret is misdirection. Jeselnik never opens with the dark part. He opens with something that sounds normal—almost sweet—and then pivots to the punchline with such speed that the audience laughs before they've fully processed what they just heard. The laugh is reflexive, and by the time the brain catches up, it's too late to be offended.
He's also built enough audience trust that people come to his shows pre-consenting to the darkness. They know what they're getting. This creates a unique dynamic: an audience that actively wants to be shocked, and a comedian who has studied exactly how to deliver. It's a collaboration between performer and crowd that only works because Jeselnik has never broken the contract.
