The Racial Draft
Chappelle's Show, Season 2, 2004
Find on Amazon“With the first pick in the racial draft, the Black delegation selects... Tiger Woods.”
A Chappelle's Show sketch imagining what would happen if races could claim multiracial celebrities through a fantasy draft.
The setup is pure ESPN: a draft floor, team representatives, analysts providing commentary. The Black delegation opens by selecting Tiger Woods, citing his dominance and the fact that he's "been down since day one." The Whites take Colin Powell. Asians get the Wu-Tang Clan. Jews take Lenny Kravitz.
Each pick is announced with complete seriousness. Trade negotiations happen. Surprised reactions. Strategy discussions. The genius is in the details—treating America's obsession with racial categorization with the same gravity as fantasy football.
The sketch exposes the absurdity of racial gatekeeping. Who decides who belongs to what group? What does it even mean to "claim" someone? The draft format makes these questions unavoidable by forcing explicit decisions that are usually implicit.
