“There's an epidemic of gold-digging whores in this country.”

From his special "Why Do I Do This," Bill launches into what became one of his signature bits: a fearless examination of gold-digging and the unspoken financial dynamics of modern relationships.

Burr's thesis is straightforward: there's an epidemic that nobody wants to talk about. Women who marry for money, take half in the divorce, and face no social consequences. He builds his case methodically, anticipating counterarguments and dismantling them.

What makes the bit work isn't just the controversial premise—it's Burr's construction. He acknowledges that not all women do this. He admits his own culpability in the dating dynamics he's describing. He grants that men have their own bullshit. But he refuses to not say the thing he sees.

The bit became one of his most quoted and debated. Some saw it as misogynistic; others as a rare moment of honesty about topics polite society ignores. Burr would probably say both responses prove his point.
