Motherhood Isn't The Hardest Job
I'm Sorry You Feel That Way, 2014
Find on Amazon“Any job you can do in your pajamas is not the hardest job on the planet.”
One of Burr's most controversial bits. He takes on a phrase that has achieved sacred status in American culture: "Motherhood is the hardest job on the planet."
His argument is characteristically direct: while being a mother is difficult, calling it the hardest job on the planet is an insult to coal miners, roofers in July, and anyone doing actual backbreaking labor. "Any job you can do in your pajamas is not the hardest job."
Burr walks through his argument methodically, acknowledging what mothers do while refusing to grant them rhetorical supremacy over people who die on the job. He pulls back just enough to avoid seeming cruel, then pushes further.
The bit is a perfect example of Burr's comedy: taking something everyone agrees about and asking "Do we though?" The laughter comes from recognition—he's saying what a lot of people think but won't say out loud.
