History Guys
Gillis has a recurring fascination with historical figures—not the mythologized versions, but what they were probably like as regular dudes. His thesis: every great historical figure was also, on some level, just some guy.
He imagines the Founding Fathers as a group of friends who got drunk and wrote a document. Lewis and Clark as two bros who kept getting lost but refused to ask for directions. Abraham Lincoln as the tallest, most awkward person at every party he attended.
The bit taps into something genuinely funny: history books strip humanity from historical figures, and Gillis puts it back. The laugh comes from recognition—yeah, George Washington probably did have bad days where he just wanted to go home.
It's also a sneaky showcase for Gillis's intelligence. You can't make historically specific jokes without knowing the history. He wears his knowledge lightly, delivering it in a laid-back tone that sounds like a guy at a barbecue, not a lecturer.
