Trump vs. Biden

Gillis approaches the political divide not as a partisan but as a bewildered observer. His premise: nobody is actually enthusiastic about either option. Half the country is pretending to love a guy they'd cross the street to avoid, and the other half is pretending their guy remembers what street he's on.

What makes the bit work is Gillis's refusal to pick a side. He's not making a political argument—he's describing a situation that everyone recognizes but nobody will admit to. The laughter in the room comes from relief: finally, someone is saying what everyone is thinking.

It's political comedy that doesn't preach, which is increasingly rare. Gillis makes both sides equally absurd, and the audience—regardless of their politics—feels seen rather than attacked.
