Gillis takes stock of his body with the resigned clarity of a man who has tried nothing and is all out of ideas. He knows why he's fat. He eats too much. He eats badly. He eats at times when no reasonable person should be eating. The mystery isn't the cause—it's why he keeps pretending to be confused by it.

The bit works because Gillis refuses the usual comedian move of exaggerating for effect. He describes real meals, real quantities, real times of day. The specificity is the comedy: a detailed account of a 2 AM gas station run that includes items no one has ever purchased sober.

What elevates it beyond simple self-deprecation is Gillis's complete lack of shame. He's not apologizing or promising to change. He's reporting from the front lines of a war he has no intention of winning, and the audience loves him for the honesty.
