The title bit of his 2019 Netflix special is Jeselnik at his most concentrated. The premise is exactly what the title suggests: a fire in a maternity ward. In any other comedian's hands, this is where the audience checks out. In Jeselnik's, it's where they lean in.

The bit works because Jeselnik has spent the entire special training the audience to expect misdirection. By this point, they know the game—setup, assumption, darker-than-expected punchline. So Jeselnik plays against their expectations of his expectations, creating a recursive loop of misdirection that leaves the audience genuinely unsure where the joke is going.

The result is a bit that's simultaneously his darkest and his most technically accomplished. The laughs aren't from shock—they're from admiration. The audience is watching a comedian operate at the absolute edge of what comedy can do, and they can't look away.
