Bill Burr has a solution for climate change. You're not going to like it. But you might not be able to argue with it.
"Here's my plan: we need to start randomly sinking cruise ships."
From "I'm Sorry You Feel That Way," this bit begins with an observation that's hard to dispute: the planet has too many people, and nobody wants to talk about it. Every environmental solution involves reducing consumption, but nobody mentions reducing consumers.
Burr's proposal—targeting cruise ships—is chosen with surgical dark precision. Cruise ships are floating monuments to excess. They burn obscene amounts of fuel. They dump waste into the ocean. The passengers are, by Burr's calculation, the most expendable members of society: people with enough money to float around eating shrimp while the planet dies.
"You wouldn't even know they were gone. They're already out in the ocean. They're already missing."
The audience laughs nervously. Burr keeps building. He adds details—random selection, no pattern, keep people guessing. The logistics of his genocidal cruise ship plan are, disturbingly, well thought out.
But the bit isn't really about cruise ships. It's about the gap between the severity of climate change and the triviality of our responses. We bring reusable bags to the grocery store while corporations dump millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. We sort our recycling while the Amazon burns. The scale of the problem dwarfs every solution we're willing to consider.
Burr's "solution" is monstrous, and that's the point. It forces you to confront a question the environmental movement doesn't want to ask: if the problem is truly existential, why are all our solutions so polite?
The bit became one of his most famous. Some missed the satire and thought he was genuinely advocating mass murder. Burr would probably argue that anyone who took it literally was proving his point about the general public's intelligence.
