The Rat King

A "rat king" is a real thing. It occurs when a group of rats become entangled by their tails—through dirt, feces, blood, or ice—and fuse into a single writhing mass of rodents that can no longer separate. It's horrifying. Theo Von made it his brand.

"A rat king is what happens when a bunch of rats get their tails tied together and they can't get free. They just become one thing. One rat. A king. That's what my life has been—just a bunch of things tangled together that I can't separate."

The "Rat King" became Von's nickname, his podcast's imagery, and a recurring reference point in his comedy. It works as metaphor on multiple levels: the entanglement of his childhood experiences, the knotted mess of trauma and humor that defines his material, the inability to separate the dark parts of his life from the funny ones.

"I heard about rat kings and I thought, that's me. I'm a rat king. All my problems are stuck together. You can't solve one without pulling on all the others."

Von uses the rat king concept to explore how his various issues—addiction, family dysfunction, poverty, loneliness—aren't separate problems but one interconnected mass. Pull on the addiction and you get the childhood. Pull on the childhood and you get the father. Pull on the father and you get Louisiana. It's all one thing.

"People say, 'Just deal with your issues one at a time.' But my issues are a rat king. There is no one at a time. It's all at the same time. It's always been all at the same time."

The image is grotesque and perfect. Von took something repulsive from nature and turned it into a framework for understanding himself. That's his gift: finding beauty, or at least meaning, in the things most people would rather not look at.
