“Where the fuck did you get that banana?”

"Bananas are like traffic lights: green means 'not yet,' yellow means 'go ahead,' and red means 'where the fuck did you get that banana?'"

The structure is classic Hedberg: find two unrelated things, build a metaphor that seems to work, then ride it until it crashes into absurdity.

Bananas and traffic lights share a color progression, so the metaphor has a foundation. Green means unripe—don't eat it yet. Yellow means ripe—proceed. The parallel holds. We nod along, waiting for the pattern to complete.

Then: red. Bananas don't turn red. Traffic lights do. The metaphor breaks, and the breaking is the joke. Hedberg acknowledges the rupture with the only reasonable response: confusion. Where did you get a red banana? What nightmare grocery store do you shop at? What has happened to your produce?

The profanity—"where the fuck"—is essential. It's not anger, it's bewilderment. Hedberg has followed the logic as far as it will go and arrived at a place that shouldn't exist. He's not frustrated with the banana; he's frustrated with the universe for not cooperating with his metaphor.

This is Hedberg's comedic philosophy in miniature: take something familiar, apply unfamiliar logic, and see what happens. Sometimes you arrive at insight. Sometimes you arrive at red bananas. Either way, you've seen the world differently for a moment.
