“No, but I want a regular banana later, so... yeah.”

"My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana. I said, 'No, but I want a regular banana later, so... yeah.'"

In one sentence, Mitch Hedberg captures something that entire philosophy departments have failed to articulate: the relationship between a thing and its potential, between what something is and what it will become.

The "so... yeah" is the key. That pause, that trailing conjunction, that reluctant acceptance—it conveys a man who has run the calculation in his head, found the answer he didn't want, and accepted it with the resignation of someone who knows logic doesn't care about preferences.

Hedberg could do in ten words what other comedians needed ten minutes for: reveal that the world, examined closely enough, doesn't quite make sense.
